Through new evidence from art, archeology, religion, and anthropology, Eisler shows that mythologies suggesting that human nature is inherently warlike or aggressive can be re-interpreted, showing it to be less war-like than traditionally thought She points toward new mythologies which involve partnership and cooperation, and are essential for facing the awesome crisis of nuclear power, the most dangerous weapon of the Blade social order. These latter societies were characterized by violent, authoritarian and hierarchical rule. Using recent archeological findings, Eisler demonstrates that peaceful societies actually existed (symbolized by the Chalice), but were overtaken by violent societies (symbolized by the Blade). Reviews the book, The Chalice and the Blade: Our History, Our Future by Riane Eisler (1987).
